lassen/brokeoff update

Posted by JOHN ZAZZARA on Wednesday, 14 April 1999, at 4:49 a.m., in response to lassen peak, posted by john zazzara on Wednesday, 31 March 1999, at 12:05 p.m.

A few Pcs folks joined forces on the w/e of the 3rd-4th to goof off in lassen park. I had been up the previous w/e and found the conditions to be quite springlike. This w/e was more wintery due to a front that moved in on friday/saturday, and lingered well into saturday evening. I joined the pcs`ers on sunday morning with my own partner Steve Shields (rockjock par excellance). We slept on the roadside at about 4500 ft elevation, while some serious winds cranked at the higher elevations in the park. When we finally joined up with the Pcs`ers sunday morning they had already done brokeoff under full conditions the previous day. Most of the group summited Brokeoff in galeforce winds. More Pcs`ers arrived sunday morning and 4 of us took off for brokeoff summit. The day turned out to be sunny and mild, and snowfall from the previous days had amounted to only 2-3 inches. Blown about, the 2-3 inches piled up in a few areas to feel like much deeper snow. Some parts were windslabby, some powdery. All in all it was an easy climb, and the ski down was a blast, with each skier pickin his own line and poking about the hill looking for (and finding) pockets of good powder. So conditions were good, the road up to the peak still not plowed, but about to begin. Overall things are looking great in lassen, little or no avy danger, and a great snowpack.
